Task at Hand
One of the most significant mosques in the Kingdom, King Abdullah I Mosque — “the blue-domed mosque” — was built in the 1980s in the heart of downtown Amman by the late King Hussein as a memorial to his grandfather.
The signature blue dome mosaic required maintenance after signs of corrosion and deterioration emerged from years of environmental stress. Severely damaged mosaic tiles needed replacement with new blue tiles. Specifications required a high-performance tile adhesive and grout system with exceptional mechanical strength — durability being the key focus, with the dome constantly exposed to rain, wind, snow, and temperature change.
KingKrete Solution
Single-component cementitious adhesives do not adhere well to glass mosaic tiles, so this high-performance, two-part cementitious tile adhesive was selected — far better adhesion, exceptional mechanical and bond strength, extended open time, excellent slip resistance, temperature resistance, and non-sag ability, ideal for fixing tiles over the dome-shaped substrate.
Epoxy grouts become brittle and yellow under sunlight, so this two-part cementitious tile grout was selected for the dome’s glass mosaic — optimal abrasion resistance for higher durability, uniform colour, exceptional mechanical and bond strength to glass mosaic, and a low shrinkage rate minimising cracking risk.
All old tiles were removed, the surface prepped, and concrete substrate repairs completed. New blue glass mosaic tiles were laid over KingTile C400 applied to the dome; once set, KingFill C200 grouted the joints.
