Task at Hand
Kattupalli Port is considered one of the largest shipyards in Asia, demanding exceptional-quality concrete for its protective perimeter — giant concrete blocks known as Accropodes: single-layer armor units placed on the seaside bank to resist wave action on the breakwater, unreinforced blocks built with several angled legs.
The project required a 50% slag product that, paired with an admixture, would ensure higher-quality concrete in fineness, air permeability, activity index, and compressive strength. A compatible SNF (Sodium Naphthalene Sulfonate Formaldehyde Condensate) admixture was chosen for its higher slump control, one hour of workability retention, strength gain, adaptability to various cements, and non-corrosiveness to reinforcement. Concrete grades from M10 to M45 were designed; the main Accropodes were M30, cast with particular attention to bleeding, surface blemishes, and compaction.
KingKrete Solution
Based on mock studies and research, KingKrete provided an excellent tailor-made SNF product — a high-range water-reducing admixture with an emphasis on workability retention. With such improvement to workability, all issues with segregation, bleeding, placing, and compacting were minimized or eliminated. The extensive project criteria were met, and Accropodes of desirable finish, durability, and ultimate strength were furnished.
Final mix design:
- »Cement — 230 kg/m³ (388 lb/yd³)
- »GGBS — 160 kg/m³ (270 lb/yd³)
- »Free water — 165 l/m³ (33.4 gallons/yd³)
- »100% crushed sand
