Task at Hand

Johnson Concrete Products is a leading manufacturer of high-quality concrete masonry units, pipes, and hardscape products. The Salisbury location specializes in reinforced concrete pipe (RCP) for stormwater management, serving NCDOT, commercial grading contractors, and water-works distributors — nationally recognized for its quality-control program.

The plant was experiencing two significant issues with cast pipes: an inability to achieve the required smooth finish, with minor bug holes appearing, and challenges achieving the necessary early strength. A high-performance admixture was needed to provide a smoother, more appealing finish while minimizing bug holes and improving ultimate strength.

KingKrete Solution

KingMix 1000ES

A chloride-free, premium-quality plasticizing admixture based on polycarboxylic polymers, especially formulated for machine-made (dry-cast) concrete products — allowing better compaction, higher early strength, smoother finish, and minimal bug holes. Dosed via KingKrete’s specialized direct-feed dispensing system.

KingAdd HC3

A unique hydration-controlling admixture added at a specific dosage rate to improve the curing process, allowing additional strength gain without affecting the setting time of concrete.

After fabricating, welding, and aligning the reinforcing steel in the molds, the treated dry mix is cast and compacted on a vibrating table. Pipes cure one day in the curing room, then complete curing in the yard, with samples tested for flexural strength against Department of Transportation requirements — which the treated pipes passed.
